Wastewater Operations Technical Assistance
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT PLANT OPERATORS operate microbiological processes and mechanical
equipment in wastewater treatment facilities in order to remove harmful
waste products from water and to render it environmentally acceptable.
They maintain pumps, pipes, valves, and processing equipment to move wastewater
through collection systems and through various treatment processes. They
read and interpret meters and gauges. They also operate chemical-feeding
devices, perform laboratory analysis, and keep records of their work. They
must be jacks of all trades and be familiar with electricity, electronics,
mechanics, chemistry, microbiology, hydraulics, and a host of other
disciplines.
Technical
assistance
is provided by a staff of experienced operators and engineers in the following
ways:
- Regular
visits
to the facilities to inspect and offer "one on one" training in all areas
of plant operations and maintenance.
- Specific
process
control training and assistance at the WWTF to enable a facility to get
back into compliance with a strict NPDES permit.
- The sharing
of
information and ideas between operators of WWTFs through the use of round
table discussion groups, a wastewater newsletter, an annual trade fair,
and through close involvement with the New Hampshire Water Pollution Control
Association.
