What is the Process of Removing a Dam in New Hampshire?

The Department of Environmental Services has created a staff position for the purpose of assisting dam owners and communities through the dam removal process.

Therefore, a good first step is to contact the River Restoration Coordinator, (603-271-3406).

Dam owners should obtain two documents: 1) the appropriate Wetlands Bureau permit application, and 2) the Attachment to the Standard Dredge and Fill Application for Dam Removal Projects. Both of these documents shall be submitted to the Wetlands Bureau. Questions on the Attachment have been specifically developed to help the applicant address issues that may be unique to a dam removal project. The River Restoration Coordinator can assist the applicant during the process of designing the dam removal project and completing the application materials. The River Restoration Coordinator can also assist the applicant in identifying potential funding sources to offset their costs of dam removal.
