Drinking Water Source Protection Program
Youth Education
Throughout its history, DWSPP has emphasized
education as a means of source protection. The idea
is that most people do not want to pollute their
drinking water, and that if people were more aware
of the potential threats to drinking water, they
would voluntarily handle hazardous substances more
responsibly.
Youth education is an effective approach for
getting the word out about protection to residents
in a water supply area. Children who learn about
drinking water bring the message home to parents,
grandparents, siblings, and neighbors. Successful
approaches that have been used include classroom
presentations, water festivals, water science
fairs, field trips and tours to watersheds and
treatment plants, and distributing resources to
teachers.
DES and DWSPP offer various resources to help you
begin a youth education program.
