Concord, NH – The NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) has posted the 2005 solid waste disposal tonnages and recycling rates for municipalities on the DES web site. This data is obtained from the Annual Facility Reports filed by each town that has a solid waste facility. Recycling rates vary from 0% to just under 72%. The state’s overall recycling rate average was 17.76%. The rate is calculated as a percent of all waste created, including household and commercial. Recycling includes all recyclables including compost.
Municipalities interested in increasing their recycling rates can contact DES for information on proven programs, such as Pay As You Throw. DES also provides technical assistance to municipalities on transfer station design, operator training and other solid waste programs.
