DES to Host Public Information Meeting on the Re-Adoption of the Asbestos Disposal Sites Rules
Concord, NH - The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services will hold a public information meeting regarding the re-adoption of the Asbestos Disposal Sites (ADS) Rules (Chapter Env-Sw 2100) of the Solid Waste Rules. The majority of ADS is in Nashua and Hudson due to the past dumping practices by a former Nashua-based asbestos manufacturing plant. The purpose of the ADS Rules is to protect public health by minimizing human exposure to asbestos. The ADS Rules accomplish this by specifying requirements for covering, monitoring, and maintaining disposal sites; controlling any excavation or other disturbance of asbestos at the disposal sites, including work plan requirements and safe work practices; and specifying requirements for notification and disclosure to ensure that appropriate persons are informed of site conditions. The ADS Rules are due to expire on February 16, 2010. Continuing the ADS Rules will further protect the public from exposure to asbestos, a known carcinogen.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for the communities of Nashua and Hudson and other interested parties to read and comment on the ADS rules and proposed changes.
