Town of Piermont Pays Fine for Air Pollution Violations
Concord, NH - Commissioner Thomas S. Burack of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services announced today that the Town of Piermont has paid an administrative fine of $4,210 for violations of the State’s Air Pollution Control Act that occurred on February 14, 2009, when the Piermont Fire Department burned a vacant house.
Local fire departments are allowed to burn structures in order to conduct bona fide fire fighter instruction and training. However, a fire department is only allowed to burn a structure for the purpose of conducting firefighter instruction and training, if it first notifies DES and takes proper steps to ensure that hazardous materials are removed. DES did not receive prior notification of firefighter training or of the proposed demolition of the house, and the house was not inspected for asbestos prior to the demolition, all of which are DES requirements.
For information on this action or on New Hampshire’s air program, contact Pam Monroe, DES Compliance Bureau Administrator, at 271-0882.
