DES Workshop for Marinas and Boat Repair Facilities
Workshop Provides Assistance on Federally Required Stormwater Discharge Permit

Concord, NH- The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) is pleased to announce an upcoming work session to help New Hampshire’s marina and boat repair facility operators obtain their federally required stormwater discharge permits. The workshop will be held on Thursday, March 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at DES at 29 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H. In September 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the new Multi-Sector General Permit (MSGP) for stormwater discharges associated with industrial activities which fall under the purview of the Clean Water Act. All marinas and boat repair facilities in New Hampshire must determine their eligibility under this permit and must take steps to comply with the permit in order to minimize pollutants from stormwater runoff from getting into the state’s surface waters.

This work session will include step-by-step instructions about determining activities covered by the permit, methods for minimizing stormwater exposure, information needed when filing for the permit, and follow-up requirements after filing. New Hampshire marina and boat repair facility operators continue to be tremendous stewards of water protection and EPA, DES and the New Hampshire Marine Trades Association want to help them carry on that tradition. To help to determine how this permit applies to specific marinas and boat repair facilities attendees are highly encouraged to bring the following to the March 11th Work Session:

  • A site plan of the facility. This plan does not need to be professional or to scale, but should include the general location of buildings, paved surfaces, storm drains, docks, waterbodies, roads, fuel storage, hazardous waste storage, boat washing stations, etc.
  • Photographs of activities. This includes fuel storage areas, washing stations, fueling docks, boat painting areas, maintenance areas, etc.

Please register by Friday, March 5, 2010. There is a $5 registration fee to be collected at the door (cash only).
