Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration:

  • Applicants must have completed a pollution prevention project or projects that reduce or eliminate wastes at their source; increase efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water, or another resource; or protect natural resources using conservation techniques.

  • Applicants must be in good standing with state and federal environmental laws.

  • Award recipients must agree to allow a summary of their accomplishments to be published by the NHPPP.

What is a Pollution Prevention Project or Environmental Program?
Pollution prevention (P2) means the use of materials, processes, or practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants or wastes at the source, or minimize their release into the environment prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal.  In short, P2 avoids or minimizes the transfer of pollutants or wastes from one medium, such as air, water or land, to another.
Examples of pollution prevention projects include, but are not limited to:

  • A change in the production process or raw materials, which reduces the volume and/or toxicity of the waste generated;
  • A process that recovers usable materials or energy that otherwise would be considered waste;
  • An improvement in operations or maintenance of existing process equipment and methods that reduced or prevented waste generation;
  • Outreach and educational programs to promote pollution prevention; and/or
  • A water reduction or conservation project.
