Pollution Prevention Program

Pollution Prevention in the Automotive Industry

The auto repair business involves handling and managing a variety of regulated materials that can be harmful to both the auto technician's health and the environment.

To ensure hazardous substances don't end up in the wrong place, generators of hazardous wastes are responsible for complying with a variety of state and federal environmental requirements. These requirements prevent hazardous releases to the environment, protecting our health and natural resources.

Hazardous substances can be costly to manage, and the more you have, the more expensive it is. Pollution prevention can help automotive related businesses to manage oil, gasoline, degreasers, solvents, paints, and other regulated wastes properly. We help businesses do this by reducing or eliminating wastes created at the source, avoiding the generation of a waste. P2 protects the environment by reducing the risk of toxic releases and, at the same time, saving New Hampshire companies and organizations money by avoiding waste handing, disposal and treatment costs.

Reduce waste by establishing good operating procedures, substituting less toxic or non-toxic products for toxic products, and modifying processes. Reuse or recycle your wastes whenever possible, rather than disposing of them. To determine the kinds of approaches that suit your shop:

  • Identify the types of wastes you generate
  • Identify your waste reduction goals
  • Explore alternatives to the processes that generate your wastes
