Since November 2005, New Hampshire has required the owner of a dental practice to install an ISO 11143-approved amalgam separator or equivalent and to proper manage the amalgam waste trapped by the separator. The owner must provide the Department of Environmental Services with a written self certification form on separator installation and a list of dental providers at their practice but allows for an exemption for oral specialists who do not generate amalgam wastes.
According to the NH Board of Dental Examiners, there are 1,074 NH licensed dentists. As of November 2008, the current statuses of the amalgam separator installation statistics are as follows:
- 853 dentists installed separator.
- 88 dentists are retired or work in another state.
- 137 dentists have specialties that are exempt from the requirement.
- 84 have failed to submit the certification form.
