Mobile Source Program

Mobile sources (cars, trucks, buses, off-road vehicles, airplanes, etc.) are major generators of air pollution and are, in fact, the largest source of major air pollutants such as hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO). In the United States, motor vehicles are responsible for up to half the smog-forming VOCs and NOx; they release more than 50 percent of the hazardous air pollutants; and they emit up to 90 percent of the CO found in urban air. The pollution comes from by-products of the combustion process (emitted in the exhaust) and from evaporation of the fuel itself. more …
