- Reduce vehicle warm-up idling time. Start driving after about 30 seconds of idling, assuming your windows are clear. In cold weather, consider the use of a spray de-icer or engine block heater.
- Turn your car off when parked or stopped for more than 10 seconds (except in traffic). No matter where you’re parked – such as when visiting a store, bank, post office, or school, or even when you’re sitting in the car waiting to pick someone up – studies show that idling longer than 10 seconds uses more gas than restarting.
- Minimize the use of remote car starters. These devices encourage you to start your vehicle before you are ready to leave, which means wasteful idling.
- Consider parking and going inside instead of using the drive-thru at banks and restaurants.
- Spread the word. Talk to your family, friends, neighbors and business associates about the benefits of reduced idling. Encourage them to join you in saving money, protecting the environment, and contributing to a healthier community.
