The State Hazardous Waste Site Program manages all sites where a hazardous substance or waste has been released or has the potential to be released. The program excludes all sites managed under 1) a Federal program (Superfund or Department of Defense) and 2) the petroleum product releases (although many contaminated sites have both hazardous waste and petroleum releases). The state hazardous site program includes other programs, such as, Brownfields, Pre-Remedial (CERCLIS), RCRA Corrective Action (RCRIS) and Time Critical Removals.
