Solid Waste Management Bureau

Generally speaking, “solid waste” is any abandoned or discarded material that has been placed in the waste stream.This includes, for example, household trash, construction and demolition debris, furniture, appliances, tires, and recyclables, such as paper, cans, glass and plastic containers. Wastes that are not solid waste and regulated by other programs include hazardous waste, biosolids and septage. Proper management of solid waste and the facilities that collect, process and dispose of solid waste is one of New Hampshire’s primary health and environmental priorities. DES oversees the management of solid waste through a combination of permitting, training and compliance programs.
