The number of small, “hobby” farms in the Northeast is rapidly growing and accounts for a high percentage of farms in the region. Very often these types of recreational farms are owned and managed by people who have little or no farming experience. This lack of knowledge can cause a myriad of issues, not the least of which is the pollution caused by the mismanagement of farm wastes and manure.
To better assist these hobby farms, the N.H. Department of Environmental Services, along with agencies in New Jersey and Vermont, have partnered with the Northeast Recycling Councilto develop guidelines and “how-to” manuals for the proper management of manure generated on small farms.
