Description
DES's annual workshop, held each spring, has become the largest organized drinking water “source protection” event in New England as more local officials and residents in New Hampshire get involved in protecting their local source(s) of drinking water. Workshop sessions typically provide research and guidance concerning the most effective approaches, practices and techniques for use in local drinking water protection efforts. Members of municipal boards, conservation commissions, regional agencies, non-profit organizations and consultants were in attendance. The 2011 workshop offered 16 sessions that covered the following topics (among others):
- National trends on emerging contaminants
- Results of a regional study on the loss of forests important to drinking water
- Developing economic incentives for water resource protection
- Results of field work by UNH to better understand nitrogen and chloride contamination in groundwater
- Better information to manage seasonal changes in water demand
- Economic analysis of low impact development (LID) stormwater techniques
- Examples of low-tech, low cost stormwater BMPs that are improving water quality
- Planning and zoning efforts to protect drinking water resources (case studies)
