Overview

The New Hampshire Marsh Monitors volunteer program began in 2003 to evaluate the effectiveness of wetland restoration practices and techniques. After receiving classroom and field training in preparation for each monitoring season, volunteers work side-by-side with scientists and managers to collect information on fish, vegetation, salinity, water quality, and groundwater at local salt marsh restoration sites. The data collected is compiled and analyzed by scientists at the Wells Natural Estuarine Research Reserve, the University of New Hampshire, and the New Hampshire Coastal Program. Results of the New Hampshire marsh monitors’ efforts have been used to inform restoration practices. The NHMM operates in partnership with many organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the University of New Hampshire-Jackson Estuarine Lab, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and others.
