Classroom Presentations

Below is a list of commonly requested presentations by our staff. Topics can be tailored to your specific curriculum needs and adjusted to your class’s grade level. The majority of our presentations include hands-on activities, interactive models, with an interdisciplinary focus. Arrangements for presentations are made on a first-come, first-served, time-available basis. We require three to four weeks advance notice. Please plan to have a teacher present at all times.

Pollution Prevention, Recycling
contact: Paul Lockwood, Waste Management, Planning and Community Assistance, 271-2956

"Pollution Prevention and the Choices You Make"
Pollution Prevention (P2) avoids or minimizes generation of waste from the start. This program uses the CD Cover Game, a hands-on activity, to encourages students to think about waste generation and P2. The game is played with teams of 3 -5 players with a minimum of two teams. General information on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is also provided. Recommended Grade Level: 5-up Duration: 1-1.5 hours (depending on number of teams). This presentation is also fun for teachers and administrative staff.

"What’s Lurking Under Your Sink or In Your Garage?"
Few people realize that the average household throws 15.5 pounds of hazardous materials in the trash each year? That's because products such as paint thinner, pool and yard chemicals, drain openers, and oven cleaners all contain corrosive, reactive, flammable, or toxic chemicals. This presentation introduces students to the concept of hazardous materials in their home, how to properly dispose of them, and what alternative non-hazardous substances can be used in their place. Students will also receive information to conduct an audit of their home. Recommended Grade Level: 4 & up Duration: 1 hour

Water Water Everywhere
contact: Alicia Carlson, Water Division, 271-4071

"Water, Water Everywhere"
It's easy to get the impression that our water supply is endless, but in spite of its apparently limitless presence, water is a finite natural resource. Students will discover how water is distributed over the Earth's surface and how it cycles from one area to another by singing songs and participating in hands-on activities. Additional follow-up activities will also be provided. Recommended Grade Level: K-3 and 3-5. Duration: 1-1.5 hours

"Is There Really Water Beneath My Feet?"
Groundwater provides drinking water for over 60% of New Hampshire residents and is responsible for approximately 40% of the flow in our rivers, yet few people understand or think about this resource! Through whole body simulation, a slide show, and use of an interactive aquifer model, students will be introduced to this most precious resource and learn why it needs our protection. Follow-up activities to be conducted after the presentation will also be provided. Recommended Grade Level: 5-8. Duration: 1-1.5 hours

"All Water Runs Downhill"
This program introduces students to the concept of a watershed through the use of an interactive model. By exploring the idea that water always runs downhill to a water body, students will discover various sources of water pollution and will come to understand that they and their families can play a role in keeping our water clean. (Another, more hands-on, option where students construct their own simple models is also available). Recommended Grade Level: 3-8. Duration: 1-1.5 hours

"Ecology of New Hampshire’s Lakes and Rivers"
Many students have spent summer hours at lakes and rivers in New Hampshire. Through hands-on activities and the demonstration of field equipment, our biologists will introduce students to lake or river ecology topics including aquatic biological communities, food webs, and water quality. Possibility for outdoor session. Recommended Grade Level: 5-8. Duration: 1-1.5 hours
